What Is Involved in a Weigh and Pay Scrap Metal Service?

If you have a large quantity of scrap metal and don’t have a great way of transporting it yourself to a recycling facility and waiting to get paid, then you’ll want to read more about Weigh & Pay, a unique hassle-free service offered by Scrap It.

How Does the Weigh & Pay Service Work?

We offer Weigh & Pay to make scrap metal recycling as painless as possible. First, you call us to schedule a time and location to pick up your scrap metal. One of our scrap metal experts will arrive to load your metal and weigh it on a certified calibrated truck scale.

You’ll get cash or a check on the spot for your scrap metal, we drive away, and you don’t have to worry about your scrap metal anymore. It’s as simple as that!

Is My Scrap Metal Eligible for Weigh & Pay?

Weigh & Pay is an excellent option for businesses to quickly recycle scrap metal and get paid on the spot. However, at this time, our service is only available for certain metal types and volumes.

First, our Weigh & Pay service is only for non-ferrous scrap metal, that is, metals that don’t contain iron or steel. Common non-ferrous metals include:

  • Copper
  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Lead
  • Zinc

If you’re not sure whether your scrap metal is ferrous, you can use a simple magnet to find out. If the magnet sticks to your scrap metal, then it’s probably ferrous. Learn more about the magnet test here.

Second, Weigh & Pay is typically available for larger quantities of scrap metal with a minimum total weight between 300 and 500 pounds.

While we won’t be able to offer our Weigh & Pay service for ferrous materials or smaller quantities, we’re still interested in your scrap metal and you are welcome to come a scrap yard near you to have it weighed and get paid!

Does Every Scrap Metal Recycler Offer Weigh & Pay?

Scrap It is one of the few companies in the region that can pay you on the spot for your scrap metal.

The scrap metal industry is far more complex than most people realize. A common question we get over the phone is, “How much do you pay for X metal?” It’s not something we can answer without knowing more about a few factors, such as:

  • Scrap metal material (including alloy makeup, the form the metal is in, etc.)
  • Current supply and demand
  • Ease of transport and recycling
  • Easy of processing and recovery

Accurately valuing scrap metal isn’t something you can easily learn from a textbook, which is why other recycling companies aren’t willing to pay you on the spot. However, our drivers are trained professionals with years of experience in the scrap metals industry. When they arrive at your pickup site, they’re able to take a look at your metal, weigh it on a certified calibrated truck scale, and offer a competitive price.

Our hands-on approach to scrap metal recycling means that with our weigh & service, you’ll get cash or a check for your scrap metal before we leave the pickup site.

How Far in Advance Should I Schedule Weigh & Pay Pickup?

Weigh & Pay is our most popular service, and our truck drivers are always busy! If you’re interested in scheduling a Weigh & Pay pickup, we recommend calling at least a few days in advance—ideally, a week before your desired pickup time.

If you need your scrap metal to be picked up much sooner, you can still give us a call. We aim to be as flexible as possible to accommodate emergency requests.

Please note that we see spikes in demand during the holidays, though we always do our best to dispatch our trucks as efficiently as possible. To serve you as best we can, we’re expanding our fleet so that we can reach customers more quickly in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and beyond.
